It is his noble mission and vision that gave wings to his dream of starting an NGO. An organisation that provides free and heavily subsidised treatment to thousands of poor cancer patients every year!
In early days of his college and practice Dr. Surender Dabas noticed only a few patients who came for the initial checkup would come back again for a follow up. He came to know that most of the patients didn’t return the second time because they couldn’t afford the treatment.
Over 60-70% of the patients visiting the hospital, where he practiced had an income of Rs 5000 or less per month. “We realized that most of them were the sole earning members of their families. They couldn’t afford a treatment for cancer as it involved both time and finances.” Says Dr. Dabas. This is how the “Spring Hope Cancer Care Foundation’ got started three year back. Here they provided free screening for cancers and treatments were done free of cost for the economically poor.
The satisfaction we get from serving the community is incredible” he adds.
Apart from a being a great doctor, Dr Dabas also has a keen interest in sports. He plays table tennis, kabbadi, and badminton. He feels academics and sports both are important for one’s development. You will be surprised to know that he was a mischievous boy during his school days and was on the verge of being thrown out of school.
He was so good at academics and was a topper throughout, hence the school management had no option than to retain their brilliant student.
