Traditionally, Radiology has been a specialty directed primarily at the diagnostic end of the practice of medicine. In the past few decades a new field has been emerging which is called Interventional and therapeutic Neuroradiolgy (also called as endovascular neurosurgery). Interventional Neuroradiology is a minimally invasive approach in the treatment of vascular diseases of the central nervous system. Many vascular lesions of brain and spine are treated, wherever open surgery can be avoided, through an endovascular approach.
Endovascular treatment for cerebrovascular disease has undergone major developments over last 20 years. Its dramatic evolution has secured its primary role in the treatment of many conditions ( intracranial Aneurysms, a proportion of venous sinus thrombosis , some arteriovenous malformations and many dural fistulas) , as an effective alternative to surgery in high risk carotid stenosis and as a valuable adjunct to neurosurgery and radiosurgery (large AVMs and skull base tumors) . Its role is being defined in a big way hyperacute strokes. Interventional Neuroradiology has also made enormous progress in treatment of complex spinal vascular lesions like spinal AVMs & AV fistulas and vertebroplasties for fractured or weakened vertebral bodies.
Interventional Neuroradiology services at FMRI has a dedicated Biplane Neurovascular cath lab with 3 D rotational Angiography and inbuilt CT scan. ( X-per CT ) – Philips Allura 20/20
Commonly performed procedures at FMRI are :
- Brain aneurysm coiling.
- Brain and Spinal ARTERIOVENOUS MALFORMATIONS (AVM) embolization
- Treatment of brain and spinal dural AV fistulas,
- Carotid angioplasty and stenting (CAS),
- SKULL BASE TUMORS - pre-operative embolizations,
- Carotid Cavernous Fistulas (CCF) embolization,
- Intracranial angioplasty and Stenting,
- Intra-arterial thrombolysis in acute Ischemic strokes
- Cerebral dural venous sinus thrombolysis.
We are also deploying latest neurointervention implants like Flow diverters, Liquid embolizing agents like Squid and Phil, low profile intracranial stents and newer intracranial balloons such as 014 wire compatible single lumen balloon and double lumen balloons.
Our annual neurointerventional procedures load is around 250-300
Interventional Neuroradiology is complementary to neurosurgery and not a replacement. Neurovascular disease are managed collectively by a multidisciplinary team comprising an Interventional Neuroradiologist in conjunction with a vascular neurosurgeon and /or neurologist as appropriate.

When it comes to adoption of leading healthcare technology, FMRI is always at the forefront. It endeavours to become a world-class centre of excellence and innovation in healthcare and patient care services.
Backed by state-of-the-art technology, Our Interventional Neuroradiology division offers comprehensive care and treatment to patients with complex neurovascular diseases, including aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations and others. Our physicians are part of a cerebrovascular team that performs Neuroendovascular procedures such as stent placement for cervical or intracranial arteriosclerotic disease employing balloon and stent technology to achieve the best possible outcomes in the treatment of our patients.
