Sports and mental health
The history of sports dates back to some 3000 years. Initially sports was played as preparation of wars and training as hunters. AS the human race has evolved , so has the nature of sports. Besides entertainment, it helps us to develop basic human skills. Besides the apparent physical prowess, sports in various forms can help us shape our mental health and teach resilience. Individual sports can improve the ability to concentrate , increase responsibility and self-reliance, build mental toughness. E.g. when as a player one is swimming, does one think about the stroke or the no. of laps needed to be completed. The water shuts out the world. Left without distractions, this is a good time for oneself to focus on oneself and explore why one is swimming in first place.. On the other hand , team sports build comradery and group empathy, promote feelings of comfort and acceptance and may reduce emotional problems and insecurities. We have watched many sports where a player snatches victory from the jaws of defeat,. Not only are they entertaining , it has a bigger lesson. It teaches us about the human qualities like perseverance, calmness, problem solving skills and concentration. It is not only in victory that we learn to enhance our psychological strength. Accepting defeat in dignity too can teach skills to tolerate distress and frustration in a socially acceptable manner. Besides enhancing our personality Indulging in physical activity triggers the release of chemicals called endorphins and serotonin. This chemical makes you feel happy and reduces stress. This in turn reduces the levels of the stress hormone cortisol.
